My client, a local leader, was struggling with keeping his life in order. He was actively engaged in a number of community projects but his marriage was under strain and he felt overwhelmed, disorganized, and uncertain about what to do to create better balance.
My strategy was to help him get his feet down on the ground in his own life first, and then explore what he could do for his community. We started by improving his organization and time management skills and creating better habits that gave structure and purpose to his days. His communication skills improved and the pressure in his marriage began to drop. As he grew stronger, he brought a new sense of stability to his conversations and interactions with the community groups in which he participated.
We then focused on his desire to build community. He decided to run for office and began a campaign. Although he did not win his election, he was happy with the process and gained confidence in his leadership abilities, whether he held an office or not.
As our coaching relationship came to a close, he was engaging more fully in the work he had chosen to do in the community and was enjoying restored peace and harmony in his home life.
