Community Organizer Goes Big

My client, a local leader and grassroots organizer, came to me struggling to take care of himself. His work was demanding all of his time and energy, leaving him drained at the end of the day ~ and having supper at 10:00 at night. The strain was starting to take its toll.

My immediate strategy with him was to focus on organization and time management issues so he could become more efficient and productive. He began to delegate more in his office, empowering his managers to do many tasks he had been doing himself.  He began to take himself much more seriously as a leader, and started networking with mentors who helped him be more effective. As he built bridges of professional support into his community, he began to gain increased attention from the press and local political leaders.

As he became more successful at work, we then focused on being more present in his personal time. As his to-do list shrank he felt more able to leave work after an 8 hour day and then focus his time on taking care of himself. He started a meditation practice and became aware that he had been avoiding increased intimacy with his partner by staying at work. He made the choice to show up in a much more powerful way, both in his relationship and in his life. He felt renewed passion and clarity as a result.

Permission to be more authentic caused his passion for music to come to the forefront. As our coaching relationship came to an end, he was considering how he could offer his music at the fundraisers he conducted for his community ~ and enjoying an unprecedented level of recognition for his work.
